Wealthy Affiliate Review 2020

There's a good Blog in all of us!

Wealthy Affiliate review

Is Wealthy Affiliate worth the money?

I have been a Premium member of Wealthy Affiliate since I started my first blog at the end of 2018. The aim of this review is to give you an honest opinion based on my personal experiences within the Wealthy Affiliate community.

This article contains affiliate links. I receive a commission for every referral to Wealthy Affiliate that comes via this post. My review is based on my experience as a Premium member from November 2018 to the time of writing. All of my Google analytics data and earnings are accurate as of the date on this post. These results are not typical, but can be achieved if you follow the training to the letter. So is Wealthy Affiliate really worth the money? Read on for more information.

So what is Wealthy Affiliate about?

Wealthy Affiliate is basically an all-in-one platform designed specifically to help beginners become successful in Affiliate Marketing.

When I first signed up for the free starter program, I have to say, I was a little sceptical. The thing is, I was (at the time) spending more time watching YouTube videos, searching Google and trying to make sense of social media, than actually making positive steps in the right direction. I felt lost, and didn’t really know where to start.

information overload

My initial scepticism of Wealthy Affiliate soon diminished. The fact that everything I needed to get started was in one place, helped me stay more focused. I was immediately impressed by the support and words of encouragement from other members.

The great thing about Wealthy Affiliate is you do not have to sign up to Premium membership, but the free membership is very limited in a lot of ways. I decided to do a bit of digging during my first 7 days at Wealthy Affiliate, and I found that there were quite a few success stories. These were people I could identify with, as some of them had been in a similar situation to mine.

I understood that this wasn’t going to be an easy journey, but I was willing to make the commitment. What I particularly liked about the training I received during that first week, was the emphasis on the fact that blogging was not a particularly quick and easy route to success, and it required a lot of commitment to make it work.

Blogging and Affiliate Marketing isn’t a quick route to success. Although I understood that Affiliate Marketing was a sound business model, if the hard work and determination to succeed were there.

Why did I join Wealthy Affiliate?

After my business ran into cash-flow problems in the summer of 2018, I was desperately looking for an alternative way to earn money. I had always been seduced by the idea of making money online and apart from a period when I sold stuff on eBay, I hadn’t really explored other methods.

My interest in Affiliate marketing had been sparked by a few YouTube videos, and I liked the simplicity of it.  When I discovered Wealthy Affiliate after doing some searching on Google,  I decided to sign up for the FREE starter membership and give it a try.  For me personally, this was a good decision as it started me on my path to a better life.

With Wealthy Affiliate Premium you are literally getting all you need to start a successful business online. From the training to the web building tools to the website hosting, backup, security, and support – it’s all there in one place and at a very reasonable price.

Another great thing is you are automatically signed up to the Wealthy Affiliate, affiliate program**. Which means, you can promote Wealthy Affiliate via your, blog, social media, YouTube and other channels. Their affiliate program pays a recurring commission based on whether your referral pays the monthly subscription fee or annually.

**I wouldn’t recommend promoting Wealthy Affiliate as a new member, until you have established your own niche blog (and you’re making money from it). The main reason for this is, the make money online niche is incredibly competitive. Even with the best content in the world, it can take a lot of time to get good rankings on Google. Also, it is never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket!

Who owns Wealthy Affiliate?

The Canadian founders Kyle Louden and Carson Lim are both veterans in the world of affiliate marketing and started out with Niche Marketing Inc, 14 years ago. This enterprise eventually morphed into Wealthy Affiliate, a platform designed to help people carve a successful career in Affiliate Marketing. In that time over 1.5 million people have passed through the program.

How much does Wealthy Affiliate Premium membership cost?

If you sign up within 7 days of joining, your first month is $19. Thereafter it costs $49 per month, but you can leave at any time if you wish, and if you have built a website you can get it transferred to another hosting platform.

What do you get for the $49 per month?

Quite a lot in fact. When you break it down, I personally think it offers good value for money.  Below I have compared FREE membership with Premium membership – I think you will get the idea.

What you get with FREE Wealthy Affiliate Membership:

The free membership option gives you limited access to the Wealthy Affiliate dashboard. Some of that access lasts indefinitely, such as the 2 x free siterubix.com WordPress-based websites and other community features, other features only last for 7 days, such as the live chat feature.

You can start right here, right now, with no obligation whatsoever!

  • Live Help – First 7 Days
  • 2 Websites
  • Website Backup
  • Beginner Training Course
  • Personal Affiliate Blog
  • Affiliate Bootcamp Training – Phase 1 Only
  • Video Walk-Throughs
  • Keyword Research Tool – 30 Searches
  • Training Classrooms – 2
  • Affiliate Program
  • 1-on-1 Coaching – First 7 Days

Can you start a successful online business by using the free membership option at Wealthy Affiliate? It is going to be difficult. The free siterubix.com websites have very limited functionality – for example, you do not have access to any of the WordPress plugins. However, it is a good way to learn your way around WordPress before committing yourself to the premium membership.

If you are serious about making money online the premium membership offers good value for money. Plus you will have full access to all the WordPress themes and plugins, plus you can assign your own .com domain name.

My advice to beginners is sign up for the FREE Wealthy Affiliate membership to start with, and see what it’s all about. You can then make an informed decision based on your experience and decide from there whether it is worth signing up for premium membership. Ultimately, it’s your choice, and you are under no obligation to upgrade to premium, you can stay a free member indefinitely, if you wish.

What you get with PREMIUM Wealthy Affiliate Membership

The premium Wealthy Affiliate membership is where you get access to everything. If you’re serious about creating an online business, Wealthy Affiliate is a great community packed full of useful tools, training and resources.

wealthy affiliate review

When I started out in 2018, I researched quite a few different platforms, and Wealthy Affiliate came across as the most beginner-friendly.

One of the good things about being a Wealthy Affiliate premium member, is that you have access to constantly updated  training that is added on a daily basis, plus weekly live video training sessions. You can also search the archives and browse previous training content and videos.

Other Features

You will also have access to some other useful features, such as their in-house keyword analytics tool ‘Jaaxy’ – I couldn’t find any information about this tool on the internet, so it appears to have been developed especially for the Wealthy Affiliate Platform. It is not going to give you anything like the functionality of professional tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush, but considering it’s included in the bundle, it seems to do a good enough job.

I can’t vouch for the accuracy of Jaaxy, and I have crossed analysed the search data with some of the other tools like SEMrush, Ubersuggest and Keywords everywhere, and there are big differences in some of the search volume figures.

Try this out for yourself. Below are two widgets, one from Jaaxy and one from KwFinder.

A Social space for Bloggers

WA has been designed to act like as a social media platform for bloggers. A place where like-minded individuals can share their successes and failures, and offer help and advice. It uses the typical format of following / being followed etc. This feature is only available for the first 7-days as a free member, then you are limited unless you sign-up for the premium membership.

I think for a lot of people this feature is very useful, especially for those who are looking for encouragement and support from their peers within the group. I do feel, however that some people may be a little too distracted with the social element. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to chat and exchange ideas with other members, but it can be all too easy to just focus on the social aspect of WA, when you should really be focusing on your own blog.

Wealthy Affiliate has an internal ranking system within the platform that rewards engagement within the community. This can include writing blog posts, answering questions and helping others, so on and so forth. Again, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it can distract some people from the job in hand – focusing on their own endeavours.

Benefits of the Wealthy Affiliate Premium Membership:

  • Live Help – Unlimited
  • Private Messaging – Unlimited
  • 50 Websites – 25 siterubix.com and 25 with your own domain name
  • Website Security Package

  • Personal Affiliate Blog
  • Affiliate Bootcamp Training – All Phases (7)
  • Live Video Classes
  • Video Walk-Throughs
  • Keyword Research Tool – Unlimited Searches
  • Training Classrooms – 2
  • Affiliate Program – 2 x Higher Payout
  • Earn While You Learn
  • 1-on-1 Coaching – Unlimited
  • Private Access to Webinars
  • 24/7/365 Website Support
  • Website Feedback Platform

When you add up all the services you get with premium membership, it feel that Wealthy Affiliate offers decent enough value for money. You have WordPress website hosting for up to 25 .com sites and 25 .siterubix.com websites, plus SSL certificates, and plenty of training. And their support is second to none. On the handful of occasions I have had issues, site support has always got back to me within minutes.

Is the Website Hosting at Wealthy Affiliate any good?

The website hosting at Wealthy Affiliate is unlike a regular hosting account (where you have a fully featured control panel). The hosting at Wealthy Affiliate is a simple site-builder platform and the only advanced feature you get is FTP access.

Having said that, it’s not a particularly bad solution if you are just starting out. The hosting at WA should be more than adequate for most people who are new to WordPress website management.

Performance so far has proven to be reasonable enough, I tested my blog on pingdom.com and scored 80, which isn’t too bad, considering my blog definitely has room for improvement.

I would also say, that in my experience the support at Wealthy Affiliate is very good, and on the odd occasion I have needed assistance, the response has been very quick indeed!

Is Wealthy Affiliate hosting good for beginners?

If you are new to blogging, then the hosting at WA is just fine, although it is possible that in time you will outgrow the Wealthy Affiliate hosting platform. But as a beginner, having hosting included in the premium membership makes things a lot more straightforward.

Another great feature is when you first load a WordPress site to your domain, it is very simple to activate the SSL Certificates, this isn’t always as straightforward with other hosting platforms.

Are there any downsides to Wealthy Affiliate’s hosting?

Because the hosting at Wealthy Affiliate is easy to use, the biggest compromise is lack of control. This has to be done in order to provide an easy solution for most of its users.

One problem I came across was that Wealthy Affiliate prevents outgoing connections from their WordPress installations. The upshot of this, is you can’t just use any plugin which requires connection to a third party API. This happened when I tried to install the GTranslate Plugin, but thankfully their support did manage to sort this issue out.

Unfortunately, when I wanted to try the Ezoic advertising platform, I found this was not possible at all due to the locked-down nature of the WA hosting platform.

Despite the above problems, I still think Wealthy Affiliate’s hosting platform will be more than suitable for most beginners’s needs. If you do find you need more control over your hosting, you can always have that particular site hosted elsewhere.

Is the training at Wealthy Affiliate any good?

I have come across a fair bit of criticism of the training at Wealthy Affiliate. And although I agree that some of the training is a little outdated, I feel that for beginners it is good enough to put you on the right path, and give you an insight into making money online.

Although the initial training now seems a little dated, there are many up to date webinars available on a regular basis. Covering aspects of blogging and Affiliate Marketing that are more relevant today.

Of course, If you decide to join Wealthy Affiliate through any of the links on this website, I will receive a commission for the referral. So you may be thinking to yourself there is a conflict of interest and I’m only doing this to earn money?

One of the reasons I am writing this article is indeed to earn money – that is now my profession, I am a blogger and I need to support my family and earn an income. But ultimately, I believe Wealthy Affiliate is an excellent spring board to launch your blogging career.

The screenshots below are genuine – I left school with very little in the way of qualifications, I never went to college or university. I’ve worked in factories, warehouses, railways and roads. I don’t consider myself to be particularly clever. I really do believe anyone can start a blog and earn money from it. You just need the right motivation and drive.

Does the Wealthy Affiliate Training work?

If you follow the training, and implement what you have been taught, then you should get results. For example, I have been with Wealthy Affiliate since November 2018, I am writing this review in May 2020. My first site was published at the beginning of December 2019. In eighteen months I have gone from zero to over 96,000 visitors a month. And that’s all organic traffic. I admit there was a lot of trial and error along the way, but I do believe the basic training helped steer me in the right direction.

google analytics screenshot

As you can see from this screenshot of my Google analytics, I have gone from being a complete novice to having a blog, that is getting over 165,000 page views a month from all over the globe.

By following the training at Wealthy Affiliate nearly all of my blog posts are ranking on the first page of Google. It has been just 18 months since I started at Wealthy Affiliate and I am now earning a full-time income from blogging and have been since September 2019. The training definitely worked for me!

My total earnings for April 2020 were just over $5300 – And for the first week of May 2020 I have already earned $2000 in commissions. I’m not sharing these figures to boast, I want you to realise that anything’s possible. It’s taken me 18 months of daily work on my blog to get to this stage, but it’s starting to really pay off. You only get out what you put in!

My conclusion of Wealthy Affiliate

  • Wealthy Affiliate has served me well, it isn’t perfect and there are some things that need addressing, but on the whole I like it and I will continue to be a premium member.
  • If you do decide to join, you should only commit yourself to the Premium Membership if you are willing to put in some real hard work. I had to juggle my family life and other work commitments, while desperately trying to stay afloat financially. It wasn’t easy. My wife thought I was completely mad, spending all those hours on my laptop!
  • The initial training is okay for beginners, but could do with being updated to make it more relevant for Affiliate Marketing and Blogging in 2020. Internet marketing is constantly evolving and the basic training should evolve along with it.
  • Despite my above criticism, there is a lot of more up-to-date training available, once you get inside the platform and start digging around.
  • Another important consideration as a beginner, is don’t just concentrate on trying to promote Wealthy Affiliate. A lot of beginners follow this route, and the training given in the Affiliate Bootcamp is good. However, the make money online niche is ridiculously competitive, and ranking sites on Google, just on the basis of promoting Wealthy Affiliate isn’t going to be very easy.
  • Another cautionary word is don’t get too wrapped up in the social element of the platform. It is all too easy to get side-tracked and spend more time writing blog posts on WA, when you should really be spending time writing content for your own blog.
  • There are cheaper ways to start blogging, and in fairness you can trawl the internet and find good quality training for free. You can also join Facebook groups for support and advice. However, the big plus with Wealthy Affiliate, is everything is in one place.
  • My advice would be to do as I did. Do thorough research, choose your own niche, and concentrate on that. Maybe have a go at promoting Wealthy Affiliate after you have already built and established your own blog.

Despite the criticisms, my experience with Wealthy Affiliate has generally been a very positive one. When I joined WA at the end of 2018, I knew very little about blogging, niche research, SEO, writing content and Affiliate Marketing.

Making a good living from blogging as a beginner isn’t particularly easy. It can take a long time to start earning a meaningful income and there will be a lot of trial and error on the way.

break free from the shackles of a 9-5 job

If you join Wealthy Affiliate, start a blog, and delve deeper into the training on offer. Then your time and patience should be rewarded. If you are looking for a ‘get rich quick’ scheme, this is NOT for you.

I was 49 years old when I joined Wealthy Affiliate, and I turned 50 in August 2019. I’m not a tech wizard, or an internet aficionado. I’m just a regular guy who wants to make a better life for his family.

If you want to learn about the world of blogging and Affiliate Marketing, Wealthy Affiliate is one of the best learning platforms available for beginners. If you decide to join, you will receive a warm welcome from other members, and you will be offered help and encouragement along the way.

If you decide to join through my affiliate links on this post, I will personally message you and offer you help and support, as and when you need it.
