There's a good Blog in all of us!

Affiliate marketing without a website

Affiliate Marketing without a Website

This method works well for a lot of people, and there are a multitude of ways you can do Affiliate Marketing without a website, but It should be noted that many affiliate programs will require you to have a working website in order to be accepted onto their program. You can create a simple website quickly and easily if you follow my guide on how to start a free blog.

There are many ways to promote affiliate products without a website, but for the benefit of this article I will concentrate on the most tried and tested methods currently being used .

Introduction

In order to promote affiliate offers successfully, you need to understand the needs of your target audience. The best products tend to offer solutions to problems, such as how to lose weight or how to earn extra money online. There are literally millions of products to promote, and it is not always easy to pick the right one.

Affiliate Marketing is an incredibly competitive industry. The most successful and popular products are already being promoted by thousands of affiliates, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t promote that product successfully to.  There is always room for someone else with a different angle on things. We are all unique, and it is our individuality that is our strength.

I will start this guide with a introduction to the marketing concept of the sales funnel. This will help you better understand the whole process from brand awareness to actually making that sale.

What is an online Sales Funnel and how does it work?

A sales funnel is the journey your customer takes on their way to making a purchase.  There are a number of important steps on this journey. If you can understand the concept of a sales funnel, then you will have a much better chance of succeeding.

I will say, that there are many different types of sales funnel, I have only used the example below to give you a rough idea. The concept has been around since the 1920’s and it is constantly evolving and changing.

The process can be broken down as follows:

Awareness

A prospective customer becomes aware of a product or service, that may solve a particular problem. For example Diet Program.

Interest

This is the stage the prospect develops an interest in said product or service, and performs a search on Google, YouTube, Facebook or any other social media channel – this is where you come in!

Desire

Once the prospect has developed an interest in a product or service, there may be a desire to take things further and evaluate whether it will suite their needs.

Action

This is the crucial point at which the prospect can become a customer and make a decision on whether to purchase the product (or continue their research).

Below is a diagram of a Sales Funnel so you can better visualise the process

diagram showing what is an online sales funnel

As prospects move down the funnel, they will substantially reduce in number and eventually become leads. If you can put your affiliate offer in front of good leads, then you will have a much better chance of making sales.

Of course, this may all sound quite straightforward, but the reality is, that unless you can provide some value to your prospective leads, it is unlikely they will make a purchase through your affiliate link.

This is why creating good content through a YouTube video or a blog post is a good idea. At the end of the day, people are going to be looking to you for guidance. If they trust your judgement, then it will be more likely they will make a purchase through your affiliate link.

The interest stage

So, the prospect has become aware of a product(s) that meets their particular needs. It is at this stage they will usually perform a search. Where they perform that search depends a lot on the individual, but assuming Google is their first port of call. They will type in a keyword relating to that product, for example: ‘[product type] reviews’ or ‘what is the best [product type] in 2019’.

Now, the interesting thing is that you don’t need a website or blog to rank 1st page on Google for search results. Lets say, for example you have made a good YouTube product review video. There is a chance this may show up on the 1st page. Or lets say you have a good Facebook page (relating to the product), or you have answered a related question on Quora. All these different platforms will rank on Google. To give you an example, in the early days of my blogging career, my Pinterest pins, often ranked 1st page Google, long before my blog content did.

The Desire Stage

Now, lets just say that you have managed to get your video, Facebook page or Pinterest Pin is front of the prospective buy. At this stage, they are seriously thinking about taking things further by making a purchase, and therefore completing the final stage of the sales funnel – the ‘Action stage’.

What happens next can really depend on what kind of product you are promoting. If it’s a digital product like an online course, eBook or Software, then a ‘lead magnet’ is a very powerful tool to use to close a sale.

What is a lead magnet?

Leads are the mainstay of any business, whether you are a shop owner, a car salesman or an Affiliate Marketer, without leads, you do not have a business.

Lead magnets are everywhere, they are on TV advertisements, online advertisements, and most prominently on the high street and in shopping centres. Typical examples are ‘Buy one Get one FREE’ , SALE MUST END SOON, and so on – you get the picture?

In Affiliate Marketing, a lead magnet is something of value you offer a prospective lead as an incentive to take things further. This should be something related to the end product you’re  promoting. Lets say for example you are promoting a diet and fitness program – you could offer a free eBook or Video download.

a typical lead magnet can be a free ebook

A good lead magnet should further spur the interest in the end product you want to sell, but at the same time provide value. Thankfully a lot of good digital product affiliate programs will offer good lead magnets for their affiliates to use in promotions. If you don’t have access to lead magnets there are places where you can get free eBooks and videos.

What is a Landing Page and do I need one?

If you are promoting an affiliate offer (particularly a digital product),  then it is worth creating what is known as a bridge page or landing page.

A sample of a landing page with lead magnet

screenshot of a get response capture page template

There are several reasons for creating a landing page, the first one being that a lot of platforms like Pinterest and Facebook, will not allow direct affiliate links to certain products. Direct links to products on Amazon, eBay and Aliexpress do not seem to be too much of an issue. But for digital products from places like Clickbank and JVZoo, you will definitely need a landing page.

You can design a landing page using a free WordPress site or through one of the many email autoresponders available. Ideally, a landing page should have an opt-in form with a lead magnet. This way you can grow your email list, and promote further similar offers in future.

Another reason to have a landing page is, if you’re sending your lead directly to an offer, then you are missing out on the opportunity of building your email list. This will be an asset as you continue your Affiliate Marketing career.

A good landing page should be well-designed and indistinguishable from a website. It will give you more credibility and also give you more space from which to promote your product. It will also make your leads take you more seriously. After all, if you were making a purchase on the recommendation of a stranger, a certain degree of trust and confidence would need to be established first.

Domain Names

When you create a landing page, it is always worth assigning a Google-friendly domain name  e.g www.{your-brand}.com / .net / .org / .co.uk and so on. This will give your landing page a certain degree of credibility and trust. Domain names can be purchased from a number of providers. I tend to use Namecheap as they always provide an excellent service and make the whole process easy to understand for a beginner, plus their prices are very competitive.

How to do Affiliate Marketing without a Website

Firstly, as I have said before, if you’re really serious about Affiliate Marketing, you really should have a website, even if it is just a one-page site and used as a landing page. You can build a free WordPress site in about an hour or so.

There are many ways to do Affiliate Marketing without a website or blog, and I have listed the most popular methods below.

Medium for Affiliate Marketing

If any of you reading this have never heard of Medium.com, I seriously think you should go and check it out.

So, what is Medium.com? It is an online publishing platform that was started in 2012 by Evan Williams, Twitter co-founder and CEO. It is effectively a platform for professional journalists, freelancers and amateurs to write articles about subjects.

Why is Medium good for Affiliate Marketing? Well, for starters you do not need your own website, and secondly Medium is seen by Google as an authoritative website. And as such, any good article posted on Medium has a very good chance of ranking 1st page Google very quickly (within a few days).

Medium currently ranks #92 on global internet engagement (source: alexa.com) so it gets an absolutely massive audience every month.

medium can be useful for affiliate marketing

It is also acceptable to place affiliate links within your article, providing you clearly disclose that you have affiliate links in the article. You should even put in brackets next to a link {affiliate link}. This is so you comply with FTC guidelines for promoting products online.

If you do your keyword research, using a free tool like Ubersuggest  you can write an article based around the product you are promoting. It should be noted though that the same rules apply as if you were writing a blog post (which you are). The content should provide value to the reader, and should ideally contain 1500 – 2000 words.  You can add you ‘call to action’ two or three times and include some relevant stock photos.

If you are okay with writing articles, I would definitely give this method a go.

Direct Email Marketing

Direct email marketing is where you promote an affiliate offer using the medium of email. This can be very difficult for a beginner, as it is unlikely you will have a substantial email list to promote your offer to.

Building an email list can take a long time, and your email recipients will need to be receptive to the kind of offer you will be promoting, for example: You would not promote a home mechanic course to someone who is interested in diet and fitness.

direct email marketing

You will also need a good email autoresponder. This is an essential piece of software, and you will not get anywhere without one. It should be noted that not all email autoresponder’s are created equal. Some free ones like MailChimp are not Affiliate Marketing friendly – I found this out the hard way, and had my account closed without notice or reason.

Below I have written a quick review of one of the best email autoresponders for Affiliate Marketing – GetResponse. This software is the industry standard for successful Affiliate Marketers worldwide. It is also very user friendly and has an excellent drag-and-drop landing page builder included in the price, plus hundreds of great landing page templates that are ready to use.

Building you email list

There are several ways to build your email list. The most obvious way would be to have an opt-in page on your blog,  but remember, people will usually only give up their email address for something in return… A lead magnet.

You can build an email list by having a landing page with an opt-in form and lead magnet. But you need to get people to your landing page. This can be done by using various social media channels for free or if you are willing to invest a bit of money, there is a faster way to build your list using a system call Solo Ads.

What are Solo Ads?

Solo ads are basically email ads – You promote a product (usually digital) by using email as the medium for reaching an audience.

It should be noted, that you really need to know what you are doing in order to make this method work. You will need a good digital product to promote, a landing page and an email autoresponder sequence set-up. Otherwise you could end up just flushing money down the toilet! I will go into greater detail on this subject in a separate article to explain the whole process for beginners.

One of the most well-know and trusted suppliers of Solo Ads is Udimi. This is a tried and tested method to promote affiliate offers. It works like this – First you need to find a good digital product to promote, for example a new piece of software or diet program (Clickbank or JVZOO are good places to find popular digital products). Then you create a capture page with a lead magnet (such as a free eBook or video).

A capture page is where you offer the email recipient something of value in return for their email address (lead magnet). Remember, no one will just give up their email address unless they are interested in what you have to offer. Once the recipient has received their free eBook or video, they will then at some stage be offered the full ‘paid’ product. If they decide to purchase this product you will make a commission. If they don’t, you have added to your email list, where at a later date you can promote other similar offers.

So where does Udimi fit into all of this?

udimi is a great way to promote affiliate products without a website

If you are just starting out, it is unlikely you will have an email list, so you won’t have an audience to promote an affiliate offer to.

Udimi has an ever increasing portfolio of accredited email marketers that have large email lists within different niches. These are experienced email marketers that are often promoting to ‘fresh’ email lists.

The great thing about this platform is you can view the profile of each vendor and decide which one is best suited to the offer you are promoting.  Prices vary between vendors – the more experienced ones are generally more expensive.

Another important thing to remember when promoting solo ads, is you want to be targeting ‘top tier’ countries – these are usually the USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

With Udimi and solo ads you simply provide the vendor with the URL of the landing page you have created and they do the rest. You can grow your email list quickly this way, but it does cost money and you will need to have a good offer to promote along with a decent landing page, lead magnet and a follow up email autoresponder sequence in place.

If you choose a vendor on Udimi who charges 40c per click with a minimum of 100 clicks, it is going to cost you $40. I would recommend starting with at least 200 clicks at $80 (if you can afford it).

Lets just say you’ve created a captivating offer and out of the 200 clicks, you get 30 sign ups to your mailing list, but only make a couple of sales. If the product you are promoting costs $50 and pays 50% commission per sale you will earn $50, this may seem disappointing to be $30 down, but you have to remember that you now have 30 people on your email list.

Now assuming you have set up your email autoresponder sequence correctly, there is a good chance you will make sales further down the line. But remember… You always need to be promoting a good product and offering your email recipients relevant, interesting and valuable lead magnets. If you just bombard them with spammy emails every day, they will just get fed up and either ignore your emails or unsubscribe from your list.

Using Solo ads does work, but be prepared to spend a bit of money upfront. Just like any business, It can take a while before you start making a decent profit, but if you persevere, do things right and promote the right products to the right people, eventually you will start making profit. And the more you grow your list, the greater the earning potential.

What are Paid Ads?

Paid Ads are where you pay Google Adwords or Facebook a set amount of money to advertise your offer.

There are several important things you need to do before going down this route, as it can be costly if it isn’t done correctly:

  • You WILL need a Website or Landing Page.
  • Do your market research thoroughly – demographics, keywords, geo-targeting.
  • Make sure you have a good landing page or website.
  • Have a good email autoresponder in place.
  • Set a budget and stick to it – do not spend more than you can afford to loose.
  • Split test – try different variations and see what works best – it is likely you will need to fine tune your ad campaign.

I use Google Trends to analyse market data and narrow down my targeting to user interests, geographical locations and user demographics. It really is an invaluable free to use analytics tool.

Facebook Ads

Facebook ads are an excellent way to drive traffic to an offer. I have used Facebook ads with some degree of success, but it can prove costly if it isn’t done correctly. Another issue is Facebook seems to be clamping down on affiliate marketers, by employing punitive measures like removing ads, or suspending accounts. You will need to do ensure your advertisement complies with their policies. A landing page or website is essential as Facebook will not usually allow affiliate links in their advertisements.

Google Adwords

Google Adwords is another excellent way to promote your offer, but again you cannot promote affiliate links directly. You will need a landing page or website, and you will need to make sure your ads are targeted at the right demographics in order to run a successful campaign, otherwise you will just be flushing money down the toilet.

Social Media for Affiliate Marketing

If you’re on a tight budget and willing to put the work in, using Social media can be a very effective way to earn money in Affiliate Marketing.

social media can be great for free traffic for affiliate links

I have listed all the popular platforms below. These are all tried and tested ways that Affiliate Marketers use to promote products. All of the platforms below, if used correctly, can consistently get results.

Facebook

Facebook As of 2018 Facebook had 2.27 billion users per month.  The chances are, you already have a Facebook account, and you’ve probably got a fair few Facebook friends.

If you’re promoting a niche that you have an interest in, then there’s a good chance some of your friends will share that interest, and some of their friends may also have similar interests. This is always a good place to start.

facebook is a great way to promote affiliate offers

The next important step is to set-up your own Facebook page related to your niche, and request all your friends like and share that page. Once you have set up your page, you can start sharing product links and blog posts (if you have one).  The next thing to do is create a group based on your niche, and also join as many Facebook groups as possible relating to your niche.

It is important to respect the rules of these groups. Some groups will not allow the promotion of products, others will actively encourage it. The main thing to remember is don’t go spamming your links everywhere, you will just annoy other members and you’ll probably be removed from the group.

If you can provide valuable information and content, and answers other member’s questions, or give advice then putting a link in at the end isn’t going to be a problem.

Twitter

Twitter  is another incredibly popular social media platform, although it is not one I have had much experience with, it is still a great way to organically grow a large audience. twitter can be a good source of trafficIt isn’t recommended to spam affiliate links in your Tweets, as this is frowned upon, and may get your account shut down. Keep your Tweets short and to the point, and don’t forget to add a few relevant hashtags . Make sure you link to a good a good landing page or relevant blog post.

Instagram

Instagram Instagram had on average over 100 million users per month in 2018 and that figure is increasing daily. You can only use one external link in your bio, and this could be a link to your landing page or website. I have had reasonable results with Instagram, but you do have to post regularly and engage with your audience. You will also need to make sure the hashtags used are relevant to your photo / video clip.

instagram is gaining in popularity

Another thing to consider is when you start posting, you will get a lot of random people start following you. Most of these are using the follow / unfollow method in order to grow their audience. I didn’t realise this in the beginning and followed them back, out of courtesy, only to find I had been unfollowed a day or so later.

It is always worth finding trending posts within your niche and use an app like Reposta, by re-posting viral photos or video clips you can quickly grow your audience. Just remember to credit the original post creator in your re-post. Reposta is available from Google Play or Apple Store.

Pinterest

Pinterest is one of the best platforms to promote affiliate offers, and although you can’t post pins with direct affiliate links (with the exception of Amazon, eBay, Aliexpress, Zazzle and some others), you can add your landing page or website URL no problem at all.

Pinterest differs from other social media channels as it is a combination of search engine and targeted advertising tool. This makes it especially good for Affiliate Marketers.

pinterest is an excellent source of traffic

I managed to grow my monthly unique viewer count to nearly 10,000 within a relatively short space of time, and as a traffic source it is very effective indeed. Another great thing with Pinterest is that your pins will rank on Google – providing you have entered the relevant keywords in your pin description.

In order to get your pins in front of the right audience, you need to consider the following things:

  • Your pins need to be visually captivating, Ideally you will want them to stand out. You will need to get a little creative in order to catch peoples attention. The best app to design pins is Canva. It is a an incredibly versatile piece of software and it’s totally free!
  • First you need to give your boards a name that is relevant to your niche. Ideally this should be a keyword that people search for. For example: ‘Best ways to lose body fat fast’.
  • Your Pins need to be relevant to the board you are pinning them to.
  • When you design your pins, you will need to include a certain amount of text. This text should contain keywords that are relevant to the board and niche.
  • Pin title and description: You should have your primary keywords in your title and description – these keywords should tie-in with the text on your pin and the keywords on the board your are pinning to. You can also include relevant hashtags to increase the chances of your pin reaching the right audience.

Below is an example of one of my recent pins from my new account, relating to this blog.

an example of a pinterest pin

This is pinned to a board ‘Affiliate Marketing Beginners’ and in the pin title and description are the keywords ‘Affiliate Marketing made easy for Beginners’ I have also used niche relevant hashtags #affiliatemarketing #bloggingtips #makemoneyonline

I use a great piece of software to help increase my Pinterest presence. This app is called Tailwind, and it really works! Read below for more details.

Tailwind App

Tailwind is a desktop application that can really help boost your Pinterest and Instagram profiles. The main problem with  Pinterest and Instagram is you have to be very active in posting or pinning on a regular basis. The great thing about Tailwind is it takes care of this for you.

tailwind is ideal for pinterest and instagram

I only use this app for Pinterest, so I will explain how it works from that perspective (and assuming you know how Pinterest works). What you do is schedule a load of popular pins that are related to your particular niche (between 20-30 pins), and then you go and create maybe 10-15 of your own pins.

You then schedule all the pins, and shuffle them (using the shuffle pins feature). Tailwind will then do the rest. It will post all the pins you have scheduled at certain times of the day – these are not random times, but are particular times when people are most active on Pinterest.

Tailwind is a really useful tool for increasing your presence on Pinterest (and Instagram) and I can highly recommend it.

Quora

Quora is basically a Q & A platform, but it has an absolutely massive audience. The latest estimates suggest it has up to 300 million unique visitors every month covering approximately 400,000 topics. I use it myself, and there are questions for every niche imaginable!

quora can be a great source of traffic if you are an authority on a subject

The key to using Quora with success, is you need to be looking for questions that require answers with actionable strategies. This means you can provide answers with more depth and value.

Another important thing to consider, is you need to provide value in your answer. Don’t just provide short vague answers and spam your affiliate link, that will not work and you will get a poor reputation.

quora screenshot

What you need to do is provide detailed, clear and concise answers to people’s questions, then and only then should you strategically place your landing page or website URL. Make sure you provide a valuable and useful answer and make sure your link fits in with the general flow of the content.

You also need to do some Google keyword research. Quora questions will often rank on the 1st page of Google. Research keywords within your niche and find the questions that are getting the most hits.

I have only been using Quora for a short while, but I can definitely testify to its effectiveness as a traffic source. There is also an app available for Andrioid and IOS.  Answer questions on a regular basis, and people will start to see you as an authority in your particular niche. Then you will get people request you answer questions for them.

quora stats

I try and answer  2-3 questions a day, but some people will dedicate a couple of hours every day answering questions. The more you answer, the more views you get, and the greater the potential for website traffic.

Reddit

Reddit  is another remarkable platform with 542 million monthly visitors (February 2018) and approximately 234 million unique monthly users. Reddit is basically a forum that covers everything. So again, like Quora, it is a great platform on which to promote affiliate offers, but a similar code of etiquette should be followed.

reddit for affiliate marketing

If you are jumping in on a thread, make sure you provide value, and offer the best advice you can within your chosen niche. Sometimes it is not always prudent to put your affiliate link in straight away, see how the flow of the thread goes. A lot of successful affiliate marketers use Reddit as an excellent free traffic source, plus the more quality backlinks your website or landing page have, the better!

Affiliate Marketing on YouTube

YouTube  gets a staggering 30 million plus, users per day! Out of all the traffic sources mentioned above, this is one of the best. I only recently got into YouTube, and now I totally understand why it is so popular with affiliate marketers.

youtube is one of the most powerful tools in the affiliates toolbox

There are several ways to monetise a YouTube channel:

  • Affiliate marketing – Make a video review of a product or do a product comparison. You can include your affiliate link and website / landing page link in the description.
  • YouTube Ads – Once your subscriber list reaches 1000 subs, and your total viewing hours reach 4000 you become eligible for the YouTube partner program.

YouTube videos rank on Google, so if your video is popular, the chances are it will show on the 1st page of Google amongst search results.

Video is King!

Humans are very visual creatures, we like to see things in action! A lot of people looking for a review of a particular product would rather watch a video, than read a load of text.

If you have ever gone on to YouTube to check out a review of something you are thinking of buying. The chances are the person making the video will have an affiliate link to the product in the description.

As with writing a blog post, there certain things you need to do when making a YouTube video in order for it to be seen by your target audience. I use VidiQ which is an incredibly powerful analytics tool used by successful YouTubers the world over.  You can analyse competitors videos, that are ranking well on YouTube, and see what keywords and tags they are using. It will also help you analyse your own videos and help you improve them for better ranking.

VidiQ youtube analytics tool

Search engine optimisation applies to YouTube as with anything else on the internet. YouTube uses a complex algorithm that will recognise:

  • Keywords in the Audio (words spoken on your video)
  • Keywords in the title and description
  • Keywords in the tags.

Everything above should, ideally tie in with the description, I usually use around 200 – 500 words in the description, and make sure I include keywords that match tags, and keywords used in the audio (or if no audio words, the text accompanying the video).

Engagement is also an important ranking factor – comments, likes, dislikes etc. All help to contribute to a video’s ranking. If a viewer makes a comment or asks for advice relating to your video, do your best to give them a good answer.

If you get any constructive criticism, take it on the chin, and use it to improve on future videos. If you get anyone being downright rude or offensive (trolls) just treat them with the contempt they deserve and ignore them.
